National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Reflection

Every year on Dec. 6, Canada pauses to remember 14 women who were killed in a shooting at Polytechnique Montréal on that date in 1989. At the Vernon campus, we took this opportunity to remember those women, and to raise awareness about gender-based violence, especially violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people.

At the Indigenous Services table, we shared some statistics, moosehide pins, books and other resources. Students and staff were also given an opportunity to write a pledge on a red dress to share how they will work to end gender-based violence. We were able to have some good conversations with those who stopped by the table. Many thanks to those who asked questions, shared stories and took the time to learn about why this happens and what they can do to help.
