H5P Academy Award Nominees – Carl Doige and Kerry Davie

OC’s very own H5P Ambassador, Carl Doige, made it into the top five finalists in a global competition, which celebrates H5P creation for different categories including H5P Book, Course Presentation, Video Presentation, and Visual Effects.  Carl submitted a course presentation created to support the chemistry lab program. Joining him in the top five were Karlruhe Institute of Technology, Michigan State University, Simon Fraser University and Middlebury College. The Learning and Ed Tech team tip their hat to Carl for his creative vision and dedication to lifelong learning. Congratulations!

Upcoming Workshops

State of AI × Education

You are invited to a reading break workshop on the state of AI in Education. Whether AI intrigues, baffles, excites, or scares you, this is your platform to explore, debate about, and innovate with AI in Education.

Turnitin Originality trial subscription

Okanagan College now has a trial subscription to Turnitin's Originality! This gives us renewed access to their AI detector, to support instructors and professors in the evolving landscape of AI in education.

Here's the scoop: While tools like ChatGPT offer educational benefits, they also pose challenges in academic integrity. Turnitin's AI detector, part of the Originality suite, helps identify AI-generated content, guiding students towards ethical AI use.

Important note: AI detectors can be helpful, but they are not infallible. Turnitin reports 1-4% false positives, while an independent study suggests the rate might be higher. They're a guide, not a verdict, in identifying AI-created work.

Be aware: Students can sometimes bypass these detectors using smart prompts or AI "sanitizers." There is a dynamic, ongoing arms race between AI creation and detection technologies. For those keen to stay ahead, or potentially get out of this arms race altogether, you are invited to explore the Generative AI Discovery course available here. It offers insights on tweaking your courses and assessments for the AI era. Also, the LAR team is always here for support.

Your input is invaluable: Our Turnitin subscription is active until March 31. Please share how it's impacting your classes with LAR, your dean, or associate dean. Your feedback will help provide direction on the continued use of AI detectors

Tips for Supporting Academic Integrity in your Class with Writing Assessments

Set a Comprehensive AI Policy: Develop and communicate clear guidelines on AI use, covering ethical usage, academic integrity, and data privacy. Policies help ensure that AI tools are used in ways that enhance learning outcomes and can help foster a safe and equitable learning environment.

Set a writing baseline: Have students write an in-person paper at the start of the term to establish a baseline of their writing

Redesign Assignments: Design assignments that promote critical thinking and original analysis, discourage AI-generated content through identifiable goals and relevance, and require evidence of the learning process with drafts and revisions.

Rethink Assessments: Incorporate personal interviews and oral exams in assessments to gauge students' understanding and involvement in their work, ensuring authenticity and comprehension beyond AI-generated content.

Check out the Generative AI Discovery module on MyPD for example assessments.
