   One of the mandates of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada is to manage Canada's airwaves and Spectrum Management Officers are the individuals in charge of doing this. 

Duties of SMOs include:

  • Analyzing and evaluating proposals for radiocommunication licenses
  • Inspecting radio and broadcast installations
  • Ensure compliance with the provisions of spectrum management legislation
  • Implement enforcement options under the Radiocommunications Act
  • Carry out functional tests of electronic equipment

​Starting salary is $48,000 and the top working level salary is $76,000. There are also options for moving into management and specialty positions with higher salary ranges.
