Become a Host Family

Homestay is a vital part of Okanagan College International Education’s commitment to delivering a Canadian living and learning experience for our students. The information below may help you with your decision to open your home to an international student.

Responsibilities of Host Families

As a homestay, you will be required to provide the following:

  • Police record check for each member of your family over 19 years of age, a driver’s abstract from ICBC and proof of citizenship or residency status in Canada
  • Arrange pick up transportation when the student arrives and departs
  • Provide a private bedroom with a window, bed, closet, dresser, night table, desk and lamp
  • A home environment that is safe and clean
  • Three meals per day plus healthy snacks
  • Attend homestay information/orientation sessions as needed
  • Willing to attend special events
  • Acceptance of the student as part of the family
  • English must be the primary language spoken at home
  • Support the student in their English studies
  • Notify Okanagan College of a change in your family situation (eg. illness, separation, new partner, moving, planning holidays)

Homestay Payments

The current homestay fee is $800 per month and it includes a private bedroom and food for three meals per day plus healthy snacks. The College will issue a cheque to cover the rent for the first 2 months and the student will pay you directly on first day of the third and subsequent months.

If you wish to be part of our host family database, please complete the attached host family profile and return it to the Homestay Office at Okanagan College. As the need arises, you will be contacted for an assessment of your home.
