Please note important change to mask–wearing order from Provincial Health Officer

The Workplace and Post-Secondary Institution Safety Order from the Provincial Health Officer has been changed to require that post-secondary students wear masks while in class and in indoor common areas (e.g. elevators, lobbies, stairwells, washrooms, break rooms, and other high traffic common areas where individuals circulate freely) and that workers must wear masks in all indoor common areas, with the following exceptions:

A worker or student is not required to wear a face covering over their nose and mouth in an indoor common area or a classroom, if 

  • a. the student is unable to put on or remove a face covering without the assistance of another person; b. the worker or student is unable to wear a face covering because of 
    • a psychological, behavioural or health condition, or 
    • a physical, cognitive or mental impairment; 
  • the face covering is removed temporarily for the purpose of identifying the worker or student wearing it; 
  • the face covering is removed temporarily to communicate with a person with a disability or diverse ability, where visual cues, facial expressions or lip reading or lip movements are important; 
  • the worker or student is consuming food or a beverage in an area designated by the employer, or by a post-secondary institution, for that purpose, in which case the worker or student must be seated and must maintain a distance of two metres from other workers or students in the area; 
  • the worker or student is carrying out personal hygiene; 
  • the worker or student is on their own in a workplace vehicle or a post-secondary institution vehicle; 
  • the worker is working on their own in a workplace; 
  • the student is playing a musical instrument in the course of the student’s educational program and is unable to play the instrument while wearing a mask; 
  • there is a physical barrier between the worker or student and other workers or students which blocks the transmission of droplets.
