OC Stands Against Sexual Violence – Message from Vice President Students Meri Kim Oliver

Exterior of the Trades building on the Kelowna campus

Sept. 17, 2020

To the Okanagan College community:

Earlier this week, Statistics Canada released a new study on the prevalence of unwanted sexualized behaviours and sexual assault on Canadian post-secondary campuses.

We were saddened by the findings of this study, which highlighted how as a sector, and as a society, there remains much work to do to ensure safe and supportive learning environments for all.

With a new semester underway, it is timely to reiterate that sexual violence is not tolerated at Okanagan College. We are committed to continued education for prevention and effective response to sexual violence in the college community and beyond.

All members of the college community are encouraged to read Okanagan College’s sexual violence and misconduct policy at www.okanagan.bc.ca/sexualviolence and to review information on the website about available resources.

While many of our students are learning remotely, we remain committed to ensuring students continue to feel supported, experience safe and positive learning environments, and are aware of the supports, information and resources that continue to be available.

If you have been affected by sexual violence or know someone who needs assistance we want to know, and we are here to help with support, information and resources via Counselling Services and other services as noted on the website.

I would like to thank all students and employees who have contributed to OC’s efforts to educate and engage our community in standing against sexual violence.

OC’s Sexual Violence Committee will continue to meet virtually to sustain and expand education and resources for the college community and anyone interested in contributing to this work can contact the office of the Vice President Students.

I hope you will join me in continuing to take a stand against sexual violence and in promoting safe communities of consent.

Meri Kim Oliver
Vice President Students
