The College’s Learning and Applied Research and Education Technology team is hosting the latest Learning Days event on Wednesday, May 5. The theme for the day-long series of virtual workshops is Building for a Flexible Future.

OC faculty and instructors will once again have the chance to connect via sessions on a variety innovative teaching, learning and technology topics. Attendees will also have a chance to hear from an internationally-renowned keynote speaker with a background in critical digital pedagogy.

Dr. Jesse Stommel is a Digital Learning Fellow and Senior Lecturer of Digital Studies at University of Mary Washington. He is co-founder of Digital Pedagogy Lab and Hybrid Pedagogy: the journal of critical digital pedagogy, and earned his Ph.D. from University of Colorado Boulder. Stommel is co-author of An Urgency of Teachers: The Work of Critical Digital Pedagogy and co-editor of Disrupting the Digital Humanities. He is best known for his work as a champion of teachers and students in higher education, and he is an affiliate of the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice founded by Sara Goldrick-Rab, Ph.D. to support #RealCollege students.

An award-winning teacher, Stommel has taught for 18 years in humanities disciplines in seven departments at five institutions, and he has designed over 30 courses in a range of subjects, including literature, writing, documentary film, and digital studies.

“Our ‘Building a Flexible Future’ day is a wonderful opportunity for faculty and instructors to connect, discuss, and learn more about the types of technology-supported strategies available that align with some of the current evidence-based practices and approaches being used in post-secondary environments,” notes Dr. Beverlie Dietze, the College’s Director of Learning and Applied Research. “We’re incredibly excited about our keynote speaker and hope attendees will find value in his insights and experiences, on top of the many great workshops you can join hosted by your peers across the institution.”

Example workshops include Course Design for the New Reality, Blended Learning in a Post-Covid World, Video Production: From Storyboarding to Streaming and more.
