The transition to online learning can take some adjustment for students who are new to the delivery method. Okanagan College offers resources below to help you successfully master the tools available.
Learning tools and resources
One-stop shop for access and information
MyOkanagan is the main portal to access web-based College services like student records, course schedule, the OC wireless network and email. You can connect to Moodle through this portal
Where online learning happens
Moodle is the College’s software package designed to help teachers easily create online courses – and students can access course materials from anywhere at any time.
Classroom lessons in real-time
Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing/webinar platform designed for use in online teaching. This tool uses audio, video and chat tools to create virtual classrooms and meeting spaces where learning material can be shared and discussed. Webinar rooms include a collaborative whiteboard tool that allows you to interact with your peers and instructor in real time.
Follow these steps for connecting to your Collaborate experience:
- To join a Collaborate session, click the green "Join session" button on the Collaborate activity page in your course
- Tip: Use Google Chrome™ with your Collaborate room for the best experience
- After joining, give Collaborate permission to use your Camera and Microphone (if using)
- Take a few moments to explore the Collaborate tools:
- Raise your hand to ask a question or get the Moderators attention
- Click the microphone icon to turn on your mic and speak to the room
- Click on the camera icon to enable your camera so the room can see you
- Click on the Collaborate Panel icon to access session tools
- Click on the Chat icon to chat with other participants and your teacher
- Click the settings menu to set up your camera and microphone
- The Attendees icon lets you see who else is in the session
Software access so you can be successful
IT Services has created a new service for students to access software they may not have available to them at home. This is done through Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Students can watch this how-to video for more information about how to log in to access software while learning remotely. The service allows students to access software listed in the general pool here.

Laptops are available for loan through IT Services. Students can call ahead (1-866-839-4032) and IT Services can arrange to have hardware made available for you.
Top 5 tips to online learning success
This is a tough one, but you want to create space for concentration. Can you close the door to the room you will study in? Does music help you block out noises? Should your phone be in the other room? Explore different things to find what works for you.
Reach out for help
Just because your studying at home does not mean you’re on your own. Email your instructor with questions or concerns, ask fellow students for phone study sessions, engage in online group discussions, and contact the Learning Centre/Student Success Centre at your home campus for online support. Your OC community is just a click away.
Classes can keep us accountable, so studying from home means it will be important that you incrementally complete your coursework to stay on schedule.
Take a break
This is important if you are learning online or in-person. Studies show that people perform better when they can rest and eat healthy food. Take care of yourself during this time to prevent burnout.
Plan your time
Set aside specific times to be on the digital platforms like Moodle and Blackboard Collaborate, in addition to regular time spent studying and reading. Use the time you would normally be in class to connect online with your instructor and peers.

The new OC website has an "action centre" that can be launched easily from any page, giving you fast access to OC Webmail, myOkanagan, Moodle and more. On the top right of the page, click on the white down-arrow in the red ribbon.

Prepare for remote work
- Practice connecting to the services you will need
- Ensure that you can connect with your team (e.g. accessing shared calendars and files)
- Update your contact information
- Confirm that you can remotely access your desk phone voicemail
- Download necessary software on laptops, desktops and mobile devices
- Be sure to pack all necessary power adapters
