The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology at UBC Vancouver has collected a number of faculty examples on how to leverage ChatGPT and also revise assignments to reduce students’ use of AI tools.
Beyond the obvious approach of steering away from written assignments (and instead utilizing video, audio, infographics, podcast, portfolios, etc.), UBC suggests scaffolding papers and essays (breaking them up into sections) and bringing sections into the classroom for discussion and reflection.
ChatGPT can also be used for creation and evaluation. One case example asked students to generate formulas for a specific food product to try to make them softer, chewier or sweeter. This approach to leveraging ChatGPT is fascinating, as medical researchers used a similar approach to come up with new formulations for antibiotics to treat a bacterial superbug.
