COVID-19: OC Library information and updates

Book returns are OPEN on all campuses. Notices have been sent to users to return overdue items. Please return materials to campus drop boxes. If you have returned materials and you are still receiving overdue e-mail notifications, please ignore these messages. 

As part of the institution-wide closure, effective Friday, March 20 at 5:00 p.m., all Okanagan College campus libraries will be closed to in-person services. Services will be suspended until it has been deemed safe to resume operations. As described below, services will continue to be available online. Updates will be posted to this page. During the closure, the below services will continue to be available.

The following services will continue to be available during the closure:
Collections & Resources:
  • Book return bins on all campuses are open. Please return books, laptops or other materials to external drop boxes located on each campus.  If you have returned materials and you are still receiving overdue e-mail notifications, please ignore these messages.  Find your campus book return bin via a campus map:
  • Digital learning and research resources are available, through the Library website, OCtopus, and other tools. For technical assistance with library resources, contact the Web Services Librarian
  • Interlibrary loan requests for online articles will be accepted, but delivery is dependent on other libraries’ ability to provide service.
  • Scan and Deliver is a new pilot service offered by the Library to provide remote access to the Library's print collections. Requests for scanning based on Fair Dealing or Access Copyright guidelines can be submitted by current OC students, faculty, and staff.   • Software typically provided on campus computer workstations is now available via Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Students can watch this how-to video for more information about how to log in to access software while learning remotely. The service allows students to access software listed in the general pool here. Contact the IT Helpdesk at 250-762-5445 ext. 4444 (toll-free: 1-866-839-4032) or email support@okanagan.bc.ca if you have any questions.

Learning Assistance:
  • The Kelowna Learning Centre continues to offer one-on-one assistance with English & Writing, Math & Science, and Trades, via the website and Moodle
  • Student Success Centres outside of Kelowna are closed for the summer. Students from all campuses are welcome to contact the Kelowna Learning Centre for support (website and Moodle)
  • For Student Success Centre service information outside of Kelowna, please visit the relevant campus information page:
The following services will be unavailable during the closure:
  • Borrowing of physical learning materials (books, reserves, DVDs, etc.)
    • In the week leading up to the closure, the loan period for most books borrowed from the library was extended to 30 days;
    • Any overdue fines accrued during the closure will be waived;
    • Renewals continue to be available online;
    • Please return books, laptops or other materials to external drop boxes located on each campus. 
  • Short-term laptop loans and rentals; students who require the use of a laptop computer to complete their OC coursework from off-campus should contact the IT Services Help Desk.
  • Individual and group study space; access to desktop computers
  • In-person research and learning assistance
  • Interlibrary loan of books and other physical materials
Information for Faculty & Instructors
  • Faculty and instructors may contact their liaison librarian for one-on-one support related to course-specific materials and needs, integration of resources into Moodle, and requests for information literacy instruction for their online classes.
  • Faculty can create online course reading lists using new software available through the Library. Contact your liaison librarian or the Talis guide for more information
  • Streaming videos are available from off-campus. A listing of streaming media databases can be found here
