Catherine Fitzgerald, Ph.D., M.A., C.P.H.R., CCC

Catherine Fitzgerald is a professor in the management and human resource management options with the Okanagan School of Business at Okanagan College. She has been a course leader in the development, delivery and evaluation of over 14 human resource management courses (classroom and online), receiving financial and resource through the partnering of several organizations.  Cathy has over 30 years combined teaching experience with the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, Meritus University, Alberta Advanced Education and Okanagan College.

Since 1987, Cathy has managed a successful Human Resource Management practice consulting to over 50 Western Canada organizations on issues related to organizational learning, career development, staffing, labour market research, leadership transition coaching, harassment prevention, disability management, conflict management and negotiation. During these years Cathy further assisted both private and public sector organizations deal with resource allocation and service delivery changes resulting in workforce adjustment and reduction. Several lengthier contracts involved work with the BC Public Service Ministries, the Healthcare Benefit Trust, Murray Axmith Career Transition Consultants and the City of Calgary.

Cathy has completed courses and certificates in business, leadership, human resource management, information technology, organizational learning, psychology, sociology, career development, organizational development, organizational theory, conflict management and negotiation, quantitative and qualitative research methods, multi-paradigmatic/philosophical approaches to managing and organizing, multivariate research design, and critical management theory. She has achieved a B.R.E. from the University of British Columbia, a M.A. from J.F.K. University and a Ph.D. from Saint Mary’s University. She also holds the designation of Chartered Professionals in Human Resources (20 years) and Certified Canadian Counsellor (22 years).

Cathy has published over 18 international and national scholarly peer-reviewed publications and paper presentations, over 16 business cases and case teaching notes and over 17 technical reports and magazine articles for professional, industry and public audiences. Since 2006, Cathy has been reviewing textbooks and various articles for publishers, peer reviewed journals and peer reviewed conference papers submitted for presentations.

Cathy has authored 10 instructor's manuals and test bank questions including context dependent multiple choice questions designed to accompany human resource management textbooks. She has authored various experiential exercises and case incidents that continue to be included in human resource management textbooks. She is the coauthor of the textbook Essentials of Managing Human Resources. 5th Canadian Edition. Toronto: Nelson Education Ltd.

Cathy received the BCHRMA Award of Excellence: Human Resource Professional of the Year finalist award, the Okanagan College Scholarly Activity Award in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to the advancement of knowledge through her research and a WorkSafe BC award in recognition for her contribution to the safety of young workers.
