Deakin Collection (3rd Floor)

Dr. Barry Deakin Memorial Library College, Okanagan [University] College, Salmon Arm Campus. Dr. Deakin passed away in April 2000. His wife, Dr. Andrea Deakin, formerly a Salmon Arm resident, retired teacher, and reviewer and critic of children's books since 1971, was  instrumental in the development, recognition, and promotion of children's literature and literacy in Canada. Andrea has become one of the College's major benefactors through her generous donations of award-winning children's literature to the OC Library in Salmon Arm, in memory of her late husband, a staunch supporter of Andrea's work, and a promoter of children's literature in his own right.

The Deakin Collection holds over 6,500 titles. In 2010 as a way to expand the use of the collection institution-wide, selected titles were been transferred to the Kelowna Campus Library. The Deakin Newsletter of Children's Literature contains written reviews by Andrea Deakin and also gives further information about this collection.

Local Interest Collection (2nd Floor)

In order to preserve and make available local historical records, Okanagan College Library selects and acquires materials relating to the people and communities of the Okanagan, Similkameen, and Shuswap regions. The Local Interest Collection includes materials about the region, items published and authored by Okanagan College faculty, annual reports of local and BC businesses, magazines and newspapers of local historic importance, and maps of BC.

The Local Interest Collection is open to OC students, staff, and faculty, as well as members of the community. The Collection is located in the Kelowna Campus Library, room L200 on the 2nd floor behind the Research Help Desk. Individuals are encouraged to make an appointment to access the Collection. More information about the Local Interest Collection can be found here.
