About Us

The Salmon Arm Library provides a wide range of services that support the educational needs of students, faculty, and staff from a variety of programs including first and second university programs in the arts, sciences, and business, as well as Adult Academic and Career Preparation (adult foundational programs including adult upgrading, Literacy, Adult Special Education, ESL) and Vocational Programs, LPN, Early Childhood Education, Home Support, GIS, Trades, and more.

Services include information literacy programs that range from individual and small group tutorials to classroom library instruction for all disciplines. It is our goal to integrate lifelong learning skills into library instruction at all levels---skills that will be carried on to future academic and employment ventures.

In the summer of 2003 the Library opened into an adjacent classroom, making room for not only the expanding collection, but also providing an open, collaborative, and dynamic space for student-centered learning including the Student Success Centre

Deakin Collection of Children's Literature

Dr. Barry Deakin passed away in April 2000. His wife, Dr.Andrea Deakin, formerly a Salmon Arm resident, retired teacher, and reviewer and critic of children's books since 1971, was instrumental in the development, recognition, and promotion of children's literature and literacy in Canada. In memory of her late husband, Andrea became one of the College's major benefactors through her generous donations of award-winning children's literature to the OC Library in Salmon Arm. Dr. Barry Deakin was a staunch supporter of Andrea's work and a promoter of children's literature in his own right. The Deakin Collection now holds over 6,500 titles. As a means of expanding the use of the collection institution-wide, selected titles were transferred to other campus libraries in 2010.

The Deakin Newsletter of Children's Literature contains written reviews by Andrea Deakin and also provides information about this collection.
