Why Take Writing & Publishing
The publishing industry is evolving as text and images are shared by individuals and organizations. This has led to exciting changes and challenges in the way writers and publishers look at publishing. This program produces students with the skills and experiences needed to navigate this industry.
Students explore the stages of the writing process to the final post-production stages of publishing in a variety of formats. Our goal is to guide students in developing their writing voices, honing their skills as critics, and learning how to write professionally for many different audiences. Program courses include creative writing, web design and basic coding, typography and graphic design, and professional editing. Upon program completion, students will have the necessary skills to ensure their work resonates on both page and screen.
Skills and Applied Learning
We teach our students using industry-standard software throughout the program. Students can take advantage of unique hands-on opportunities to put their skills into practice. Okanagan College has a working letterpress print shop at the Vernon campus. Students also benefit from doing internship work with Kalamalka Press and Ryga: A Journal of Provocations. These are only some of the opportunities for students to build their portfolios.
Graduates of the program have a variety of options, from traditional to new media outlets. Graduates can pursue work in editing, graphic design, and marketing for independent presses and commercial publishing houses. Other students may continue their studies in creative writing, journalism, graphic design, marketing, or media studies. No matter what career path they choose, graduates will leave the program with a broad skill-set suited to a wide range of professional applications.
