Meet Meagan

Viewbook - Meagan I’ve been caring for animals since before I can remember. I grew up on a hobby farm just on the outskirts of Penticton with hundreds of animals and I knew from a young age I wanted to spend my life working with them – and like many kids, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.

When it came time to apply for post-secondary, I wasn’t confident about pursuing a science degree because sciences didn’t come naturally to me. But before I could apply anywhere, I had to take a pre-requisite course, so I decided to go to Okanagan College simply because it was conveniently close to my house.

I expected to go to the College and leave with my course credit – I didn’t expect to find this really amazing learning atmosphere. The professors work so closely with students and give so much one-on-one attention because of the small class sizes.

Learning at OC gave me all the confidence I needed to take the plunge and enrol in my first year of sciences. I’m now finishing my second year of the Associate of Science program and am preparing to transfer to a university to complete my degree with a major in Zoology. I’m in an amazing position to work towards my dream of becoming a veterinarian.

My professor connected me with industry people and I ended up getting to work in the field, researching an ear disease found in bighorn sheep. I’ve seen her connect other students in my class with industry professionals from completely different streams of biology.
