English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program
Who are We?
The English as a Second Langauge Settlement Assistance Program (ESLSAP) is a one-to-one tutoring program. We are partnered with Okanagan College and work with other community groups to provide support, advocacy, and one-to-one tutoring and classes for immigrants who are adapting to life in Canada.
What We Offer
We offer FREE and CONFIDENTIAL tutoring, weekly classes or field trips and access to English language software to immigrant adults seeking to improve their English language skills. Learners are paired with volunteer tutors who build lessons around the learner’s essential needs and goals.
Tutoring sessions range from 1.5 hour to 3 hours a week depending on learner and tutor availability. All tutoring sessions must take place in a public space either at Okanagan College, Okanagan Regional Library or another space arranged by the tutor, the program coordinator and the learner.
Who Can Use the Program Services?
Canadian immigrants who are 17 years and older who want to improve their English skills.
Potential learners meet with the program coordinator, BR Whalen, in an informal interview to determine the students’ eligibility. A client’s eligibility depends on his/her immigration status as a permanent resident or naturalized citizen. During a second interview with program trainer, Cathy Cameron-Suchy, an English Language skills assessment is completed. Students must be at no higher than a benchmark level 6 (intermediate) in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to qualify for the program.
When Does the Program Run?
The ESLSAP program runs from September to mid-June.
