Carollyne Sinclaire
This is my second year working with the Osoyoos English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program where I am a Volunteer Tutor Coordinator and Instructor. I recruit and screen volunteer tutors, conduct tutor training, test adult students, match them with tutors and monitor their progress. In my work with tutors and students I tend to use a hands-on, student centered approach. It is my desire to help our students grow in their ability to participate in the local community and in Canadian society.
For over twenty years I have been both an instructor of adults as well as a teacher in elementary schools in various settings and locations including Japan and California where I taught ESL and adult EFL; in the Lower Mainland of B.C. I have taught gifted students from Kindergarten to Grade 7, ESL, and taught in regular elementary classrooms as well as working as a Literacy Mentor for the Vancouver School Board. At Simon Fraser University, I prepared and supervised student teachers and worked as an instructor of Teaching Language Arts. For the provincial government, I have been part of the Language Arts curriculum writing team.
I have had a number of academic articles published in educational psychology journals and educational magazines as well as having published Looking for Home: a Phenomenological Study of Home in the Classroom for SUNY Press, which continues to be used in teacher preparation courses.
I have a Master of Arts in Curriculum from Simon Fraser University, teacher certification, a B.A. from S.F.U. in Linguistics and Spanish, and a Diploma in Arts Education from the University of British Columbia.
In my spare time I enjoy creative writing, fitness, gardening and cooking.
