Carol Abernathy
My education includes a BA (History, SFU, 1979), PDP (SFU, 1979), and an M. Ed. (SFU, 1996). I have been teaching in the Adult Academic and Career Preparation Department at the Kalamalka Campus since 1992. I have taught English at the Fundamental, Intermediate and Provincial levels, as well as math at the Fundamental Level. Before teaching in AACP, I taught some English as a Second Language courses for Okanagan College and in a First Nations Education program at the high school level.
I endeavor to support a friendly, respectful, and cooperative atmosphere in my classroom while using an instructional approach that is interactive and multi-sensory . I am very interested in the implications of current brain research for best educational practices, particularly for adults with specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. With other educators at OC, I am involved in research projects to find the best ways to educate adult students and to help them improve their reading and writing skills.
I am actively interested in local history and have served as Editor of the Okanagan Historical Report. My hobbies include carriage-driving and singing.
