I completed the program entrance requirement some time ago, should I upgrade them before starting classes? If you have been out of school for a number of years, we strongly suggest that you take Math 11 and/or 12 as well as Physics 12 prior to first semester. This eases the transition into studying and gives you an advantage for the math components of the course.
Do I require books the first day of classes? No, wait until you have met with the instructor. There are some older editions that may be acceptable and some second hand books may also be available. You do, however, require a notebook, paper and a pencil for the first day of classes.
How much homework should I expect? To begin with, there is approximately 32 hours of classroom time each week. The average student should expect to complete approximately 45 hours of homework a week in addition to the classroom time.
Do I need a computer at home? It is recommended that you have access to a computer. Computers are available at OC and all courses require some form of computer work.
What is the average age of students in the program? 27. We have a number of students that are completing a career change as well as recent high school graduates.
Can I get a Co-op job in the Okanagan valley? Approximately 30% of first year students obtain co-op jobs in the Okanagan Valley. Approximately 70% of the second year students obtain co-op jobs in the Okanagan Valley. These percentages vary from year to year. In regards to availability of co-op jobs, there were approximately 120 co-op jobs available for the 70 civil students in 2003.
How much am I going to get paid during my Co-op work term? $10 to $18/hour depending on past work experience and location. Some previous students worked over 80 hours/week!
How much am I going to get paid after I graduate from the program? Some graduates start around $35,000 per annum, but it can vary considerably depending on previous work experience, work experience obtained during co-op and location of work (as well as luck!).
When should you apply for a student loan? ASAP!!! Even if you are on the waitlist or staying with family, everyone should apply for a students loan if do not have a rich uncle!
Can I obtain a degree after completing this program? Yes you can and several students have (including some of the instructors)! You can complete a bridging program (two to six months duration) and then start in third year at Lakehead University or UBC. After two years at Lakehead or UBC, you should have an engineering degree. You can also bridge to the Business Administration degree at OC.
