Home Inspection Certificate
This comprehensive 355-hour certificate program combines theoretical instruction with field training to provide participants with a thorough foundation for pursuing work in the area of home inspection.
On completing the program you will have the knowledge and skills to perform comprehensive home inspections and prepare professional reports to industry standards.
You will learn how to assess a house as a system and understand how different components of a house work together; how to identify those that are not performing properly; where repairs may be needed, and components that are unsafe or no longer useful. You will learn key inspection points in residential plumbing systems; how to evaluate possible electrical problems; to inspect gas, oil and electric heating and cooling systems as well as the physical condition of a home.
A hands-on approach and practical work methods are applied learning the communication skills, report writing, professional conduct and safety associated with the field.
This program is offered on a part time basis using a blended approach of distance learning with some scheduled sessions on campus for specific topics as well as for final examinations.
This program meets the academic requirements of the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) for their Certified House Inspector (CHI) designation. Completion of the Certificate with a minimum final grade of 70 percent in each course is required by ASTTBC.
Successful completion of the program will also prepare you to write the membership exams for the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors BC (CAHPI(BC)), a process ultimately leading to the Registered Home Inspector (RHI) designation.

Experience in the residential construction industry will be an asset to students entering this program, but is not a requirement for success.
