Mobile Device Support at Okanagan College

Overview:

As technology has progressed, mobile devices have become more prevalent and for many users, represent the preferred way to access some of Okanagan College’s online resources. Today's mobile devices can sync your Okanagan College email, calendars, and contacts, as well as provide access to other Okanagan College services. IT Services has created the chart and descriptions below to show the various levels of support we can provide for these various devices. Summary Of Supported Features

Blackberry:

The IT department at Okanagan College supports BlackBerry devices as an Enterprise Business application. If you were issued a College owned BlackBerry device, please contact the IT Service Desk at local 4444 to sync your email and calendar with the College's email system. For personally owned devices, IT Services can assist you in syncing your contacts, calendars, and email inbox, as well as answer some general questions regarding your device. For all users, we can assist you connecting to the Okanagan College wireless network. We can also assist you in the installation and use of the BlackBerry version of the Okanagan College Mobile App (available from BlackBerry World for PlayBook and BlackBerry 10 devices). The OC Mobile App gives you access to your final grades, class schedules, classfinder, campus maps, and college news – all from your mobile device.

iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch:

For employees, IT Services can help you get this device connected to the College’s Exchange (email) Server. We can help sync your contacts, calendars, and email inbox, as well as answer some general questions concerning your device. We may refer you to your cellular provider for some types of questions. Tasks and Briefcase can be synchronized using a third party application, but do not sync as part of a normal setup. For all users, we can assist you connecting to the Okanagan College wireless network. We can also assist you in the installation and use of the iOS version of the Okanagan College Mobile App (available from the Apple App Store). The OC Mobile App gives you access to your final grades, class schedules, classfinder, campus maps, and college news – all from your mobile device.

Android Devices:

Windows Mobile:

These devices have limited support. We can give some general assistance connecting to our wireless network and can provide generic settings to help you access your college email. In general, questions concerning your device should be directed to your cellular provider.

Palm Devices:

This device has limited support. We can give some general assistance connecting to our wireless network and can provide generic settings to help you access your college email. In general, questions concerning your device should be directed to your cellular provider.

Other devices (Nokia smartphones and the like):

These devices have limited support. Some devices may have the ability to synchronize some of your email and other data. IT Services can provide general assistance connecting to our wireless network and provide you with generic settings to help you access your college email.

Notes:

  • Please keep in mind that mobile technology changes more frequently than computer technology; you should expect to replace these devices approximately every 2 years.

  • Please note that in all cases, support is limited to connecting to Okanagan College Exchange Server (email, calendar, etc), mobile apps, and wireless networks (as applicable). For some devices (as above) we are able to answer some questions on device usage and provide advice. We are not responsible for third party applications, hardware issues, or any desktop-based sync applications.
  • All devices need a data connection to sync to Okanagan College services. This can be either a cellular data package or utilizing an internal wi-fi card, if present. Please note that using a cellular data connection can be very data intensive, and an unlimited data plan is highly suggested.

    Note - The only option for connecting to Okanagan College Faculty and Staff email system will be Active Sync.
