Mechanical Engineering Technology

The Program

This technology program gives students an opportunity to enter the exciting and demanding field of mechanical engineering. The program is structured to give students a solid foundation in computer aided design and drafting, manufacturing (metal processing, automation, CNC and robotics), design (mechanical, electro-mechanical, thermal, hydraulic and pneumatic systems), and quality management. A strong emphasis on computer application software is followed throughout the program. The importance of effective communication and presentation skills is stressed in all course work.

The program will be regularly reviewed by an Advisory committee as well as by internal and external review teams. The program is provincially accredited at the level of Engineering Technologist by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of the Province of British Columbia (ASTTBC). While attending college students may register with the ASTTBC. After two years of acceptable experience, graduates may become fully certified members.

The mechanical engineering technologist is involved in the design, manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance of machines and mechanical devices. Through the Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Okanagan College, students are trained in fundamental engineering principles and practice. Students will gain a working knowledge in the fundamentals of power, fluids, materials manufacturing, thermodymanics, HVAC, quality, instrumentation and control. The use of current computer software is emphasized throughout the program.
