Getting Started at OC

If you're interested in attending a program at Okanagan College then your basic reference tool is the Okanagan College Academic Calendar. The OC calendar lists program information, admission requirements, policies, and course descriptions and prerequisites. The OC Calendar can be viewed at http://www.okanagan.bc.ca/calendar. 

Applying

Once you have identified your OC program of choice, see the Admissions web page for information regarding the application procedures prior to completing an application for admission (online or paper). Your application should state the name of the program and the start date.

Selecting Your Courses

Many programs at Okanagan College have set schedules, that is, you don't need to choose your courses. Other programs, like Associate of Arts or Science or other university transfer programs, require that you register in the courses. If you need to choose and register in individual courses for your program, you'll receive a registration letter with details from the College. Before registering for your fall and winter semesters, it's important to make sure that you're registering in the right courses. Review the program details in the calendar.

Transfering

 If your graduation goal is a degree from a school other than Okanagan College,  then you need to ensure that the courses you take at Okanagan College will transfer to that program. Your primary tool for course transfer information is www.bctransferguide.ca

Timetabling

Once you know what courses you need to register in, you'll first arrange your class timetable at OC. The timetable lists days and times of individual courses, instructors, and the location of classes. The OC timetable can be viewed on our website http://www.okanagan.bc.ca under ClassFinder, or on paper at the Records and Registration office at each campus.

Registering

Finally, you'll use MyOkanagan to register in your classes. MyOkanagan is your online connection to Okanagan College. Use MyOkanagan to add and drop classes, get your grades, see your class schedule and much more.

How many courses should I take?
Five courses are standard for university students but what is right for you is your decision. Six courses are the maximum you can take without written approval from the appropriate dean or designate. There may be some requirements you have to satisfy if you have a student loan, scholarship or bursary. Consult Financial Awards if you are unsure 250.862.5419 or 1.800.767.5492.

How do I know if the course transfers to a BC University?
The BC Transfer Guide includes process and transfer tips and identifies how courses transfer between BC post-secondary schools. It is located online at www.bctransferguide.ca.

What is a credit?
A credit hour is an assigned unit of value granted for successful completion of courses, which are used for diploma and degree graduation requirements and /or transfer credit to another institution. The credit value for each course is listed in the course description section of the calendar. See the previous example.

What if I want to change a course?
Course changes can be made, but must be done within certain time periods. At the time of registration make sure you receive an "Important Dates to Remember" handout from the Records and Registration office. The important dates are also listed in the OC Calendar. There are deadlines for course changes, course withdrawals and tuition refunds. Consult Records and Registration directly 250.862.5414 or our website  for more information. If you are considering dropping a course, we recommend that you discuss it with an Academic Advisor and we also recommend that you speak with your instructor.
