Survey of faculty and instructors launched re: use of copyright materials
 


Access Copyright is a national organization that deals with colleges and universities across Canada. As a result of a ruling by the Copyright Board of Canada in late December, Okanagan College (and many other institutions) is operating under an interim tariff that allows Access Copyright to collect royalties from post-secondary institutions for the copying of print materials for use in class and other educational situations.


This semester the College is taking several actions in order to assess the costs and benefits of the tariff. One of these actions is a survey of faculty and instructor practices. If you use copyright materials in your teaching, please take a few minutes to complete this survey before Jan. 30.

Your responses to the survey will be reviewed in confidence. None of your personal information will be shared and the information you provide will be used only for the purpose of helping the College determine the best possible means of providing our students access to copyright materials.

Winter Convocation ceremonies honour student success

Okanagan College celebrated the achievement of 429 students who earned credentials at the 2011 Winter Convocation ceremonies held on Saturday, Jan. 15.

A morning ceremony recognized graduates from a variety of programs including Engineering Technologies, Business, Computer Information Systems, Health and Social Development and university studies in Arts and Science.

The afternoon ceremony recognized practical nursing graduates from across the region. Among the nursing grads was Darrell Hopegood, a 42-year-old graduate of the program who was inspired to change careers after his 18-week-old son underwent heart surgery. The care Darrell's son received from a male nurse made him rethink his career in carpentry. Okanagan College Half Marathon registration now open

The ninth annual Okanagan College Half Marathon (formerly Campus-to-Campus) has opened registration for the 2011 race, which will be held on Sunday, March 27. This year’s routes for the half marathon, relay and 10 KM race are similar to last year’s, starting and finishing at the Kelowna campus.

As the race has grown significantly over the past few years, the race committee will no longer be accepting paper registration forms – all registrations will be accepted online at: www.okanagan.bc.ca/halfmarathon. Early bird pricing is in effect so sign up before Feb. 28 for the best deal.

New runners or those wishing to improve their racing might want to consider participating in a running clinic hosted by Fresh Air Experience in Kelowna. For details about the clinic, which begins Jan. 25, contact Lynn Johnson or call Fresh Air at 763-9544.

“The Roving Mike” supports Centre of Excellence



One of British Columbia’s broadcast icons recently added his voice to the chorus of personal and corporate support for Okanagan College’s Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies.
 


Bill Hughes, whose radio career in British Columbia lasted nearly 50 years, recently made a generous contribution to the fundraising campaign for the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies in Penticton.
 


Hughes began his radio career in Trail in the 1940s. Two years later, in 1946, he started work at CKNW. During his time there, besides becoming president and part-owner of the station, he was the voice of The Roving Mike, an assignment that lasted until 1994, when Hughes retired after doing more than 15,000 episodes. 



He was also the President of the Vancouver Canucks from 1972 until 1981. 


He has been a significant supporter of post-secondary education in B.C. and his family carries on the tradition: son Brian Hughes is a member of the Okanagan College Board of Governors. 
 


Bill Hughes was a longtime member of the Douglas College Foundation and was a major supporter of The Bill Hughes Family Library at Douglas College.
 


“I understand what an asset a College is to a community and the country,” said Hughes, “and I’m pleased to be able to lend my support to the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies. It will be an important training facility producing skilled workers to deal with the new world order around a changing climate.”

Derksen joins Advancement Office

Tessa Derksen has joined the Advancement Office as the new Campaign Assistant.


Tessa comes to Okanagan College with great experience in development and communications. She recently moved back to British Columbia, having spent the last five years working at the Royal Ontario Museum on a $272-million campaign. 

She was a Development Assistant to the President and Executive Director of the ROM. She has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Victoria and has a graduate diploma in Not-For-Profit Arts Marketing and Development (Waterloo).

Tessa has also worked in publications and communications and can be reached in the Advancement Office at local 4813.

Penticton recruitment campaign brings out volunteers

Okanagan College held a recruitment campaign at the Cherry Lane Mall in Penticton on Friday Dec. 10, drawing several staff volunteers, each of whom helped answer questions about Okanagan College and its programs. The event was organized by recruiter Jake Mason and included student volunteers as well as staff from a variety of departments.

Grassick and Salvation Army receive holiday cheer

Congratulations to Heather Grassick from the Trades department in Kelowna – Heather was the lucky winner of the IT Services Christmas basket draw.

Heather wasn’t the only person to benefit from the IT Services annual basket draw – five hundred dollars was raised and donated to the Salvation Army before Christmas.

Chief Clarence Louie, alumnus of the Okanagan School of Business, has been honored for his long term and sustainable impact to his community. Read more in Osoyoos Indian Band chief named to Aboriginal Business Hall of Fame.

Stan Chung, former Associate Dean of Arts and Foundational programs, held his Global Citizen book launch at Okanagan College. See photos from the launch in eVent’s Night Out section.

The College was recognized by Robert Fine for its role in helping the Okanagan gain and retain younger individuals to the area. Fine commented how the college helps draw young people to the Okanagan, noting the area saw an increase in 18-24 year-olds in the 2006 census. Dr. Heather Banham, Dean of the Okanagan School of Business, has been elected to the B.C. Certified General Accountants board as the representative for the Thompson Okanagan. Read more in: Banham on board.

Marc Arellano, Communications Professor, had his film, Strange Fruit, mentioned in the paper once again for its achievements in 2010. Read more in the Capital News brief.

Catherine Williams, the recently retired Health, Safety and Emergency Services Manager, is now heading up Emergency Services for the Regional District of the Central Okanagan. Read more about Catherine’s new role and the organization in Volunteer-run program starts a new chapter with new director.

The Okanagan College Students’ Union’s “Education shouldn’t be a Debt Sentence” campaign was covered by the Kelowna media. Read more in: Student federation wants education costs reduced and Paying their debt to society.

The success of Dual credit trades programs, which are partnerships between Okanagan College and School Districts, was featured in an article in the Vernon Morning Star. Read more in: School program builds futures.

Two teams of students from the Okanagan College School of Business headed to Queen’s University in early January to compete in the Inter-collegiate Business Case Competition. Read more in: Students make finals.

Dr. Heather Banham, Dean of Business, and Jonathan Rouse, business professor, were photographed at a Kelowna Chamber of Commerce luncheon, which featured a presentation from Kelowna Rockets’ head coach Ryan Huska (also an Okanagan College School of Business alumnus). Jane Muskens’ School’s In column continued through the holiday season. The four columns since our last edition of Inside Okanagan College include: New report outlines gov’t strategies to promote job growth, A father who opened up the world to his daughter, Academic advice can be overwhelming and confusing, and Computer technology is creating jobs.

In Stan Chung’s Global Citizen column, Man of Winter, he tells a story of his father and how the coldness affected his life and subsequently the family life.

Shane Koyczan, Okanagan College alumnus, made the top newsmakers of 2010 in the Penticton Herald for his performance at the Vancouver Olympics opening ceremony, his sold out performances, and his anti-bullying message. Read more in 2010 Newsmaker.

The B.C. Wine Information Society’s donation of $150,000 to the Okanagan College Foundation also made the top news stories of 2010 in the Penticton Herald. Read more in: Looking back on the year’s headlines.

The Daily Courier’s Champions magazine looked back at 2010 highlighting Rob Alksne, member of the Okanagan College Coyotes baseball team, as April’s Athlete of the Month. The magazine also highlighted the Campus-to-Campus Half Marathon in the 2010 Running section.

Parking reminder

Facilities Management is in the midst of winter operations and are asking staff to help keep all sidewalks and walkways clear of snow and ice by remembering to avoid backing into parking spots. Cars, trucks and SUVs that back into spots overhang the sidewalk, making snow and ice removal difficult. Thanks for your help.

New Year Payroll notice

With 2011 now underway, the Payroll department is working diligently to prepare the 2010 T4 Slips, due for distribution in February. Staff are asked to please verify that the mailing address that appears on your pay statement is accurate, as this is where your T4 will be mailed. Any changes should be sent directly to Human Resources.

Name that garden

SIFE Okanagan and Okanagan College are challenging staff to be creative and innovative. In the spring of 2011, a community garden will be built at the Kelowna campus between the Facilities Management administration building and the KSS daycare and we want YOU to name it.

The Challenge: create a fun, welcoming, original name.

Penticton campus refundables for Africa



The Penticton campus will be collecting all refundable containers (pop cans, tetra-packs, etc.) and donating the proceeds to Canadian Humanitarian. Special bins will be placed alongside the regular recycling bins and will include the amount collected from the previous month.  

This project is spearheaded by David Northcott whose BUAD 339 class, Entrepreneurship and Development in Emerging Nations (EDEN), travels to Ethiopia to work with the organization. Canadian Humanitarian supports projects such as LiGA, a primary school, and Kid’s Hope, an NGO that supports at-risk children in community-based foster care. If you would like to contribute or have questions please contact David.
