Teaching Large Classes

Large classes bring with them a certain set of challenges. The sheer volume of paperwork is certainly one of them. There’s a tremendous temptation to make easy-to-mark multiple choice exams the only form of assessment. In this quicktime presentation from the SFU Learning and Instructional Development Centre Dr. Russell Day from the Department of Psychology explains how they were able to incorporate a significant writing component into their assessment without being overwhelmed.

When facing a large class, reading a prepared lecture seems to be the default choice. But as a teaching method, the lecture has a widespread reputation as being somewhat dull and educationally ineffective. This presentation from the Center for Excellence in Teaching at USC explains why it doesn’t have to be that way. The concepts and techniques are relevant to anyone who presents lectures, to a group of any size.
