Just-in-Time Teaching
Just-in-Time Teaching
Originally developed by Gregor Novak to enhance Physics courses at the University of Indiana, this teaching technique can be applied in a variety of curricular areas to engage students and make more effective use of class time.
Start with this quick overview from the USC Center for Scholarly Activity: http://www.usc.edu/isd/locations/cst/tlsnew/themes/jitt.html
Next, explore Dr. Novak’s own JiTT page. http://webphysics.iupui.edu/jitt/jitt.html
Here’s a link to the full-text of an article by Novak & Patterson: Just-in-Time Teaching: Active Learner Pedagogy with WWW http://serc.carleton.edu/resources/14237.html
And another interesting Introduction to Just-in-Time Teaching from a Geosciences perspective. http://serc.carleton.edu/introgeo/justintime/index.html
While I was investigating JiTT I came across a couple of interesting quotes to think about:
"As you enter a classroom ask yourself this question: If there were no students in the room, could I do what I am planning to do? If your answer to the question is yes, don't do it." - Gen. Ruben Cubero, Dean of The Faculty, United States Air Force Academy.
“Learning technologies should be designed to increase, and not to reduce, the amount of personal contact between students and faculty on intellectual issues.” - Study Group on the Conditions of Excellence in American Higher Education, 1984.
