How Moodle works at Okanagan College:

Logging in:
  • Go to http://moodle.okanagan.bc.ca and click the word Login at the top right.
  • Your username is your OC ID number (300xxxxxx)
  • Your initial password is your birthdate in mmddyy format.
  • Once you're logged in you'll see the OC Moodle home page.
Editing your Profile:
  • In the Navigation block at the left click My Profile and View Profile. This shows your picture, your email, and links to all your courses.
  • In the Settings block at the left click Edit Profile. You can change your email address, select how you receive email digests from Moodle forums, and upload a profile picture. Your profile picture must be in .jpg or .png format and will be cropped to a square and resized to 100x100 pixels.
  • In the Settings block just below Edit Profile you'll find the Change Password link. When you change your password, an email will be sent to the email address you specify in your profile requesting confirmation of the password change.
  • Also in the Settings block you can click on Messaging and set what kinds of notifications Moodle sends you as pop-ups within Moodle or as email.
Finding your courses:
  • Every section of every course offered at OC automatically gets a matching course section in Moodle. Lots of them are not used and will remain hidden (hidden course sections do not appear for students, they appear as greyed out for teachers).
  • In the Navigation block at the left click on My Courses. You will see a list of all Moodle courses in which you are registered. Course creation and enrolment information is automatically fed from the Banner registration system and is updated in near-real-time.
  • The course code (BUAD123) and the Course Reference Number (10871201210) can be a little mysterious. If you hover your mouse over the course it will show the course title (Management Principles). The last 6 digits of the CRN show the year (2012) and the term (10 for winter, 20 for summer, 30 for fall). Continuing Studies uses 11 for winter, 21 for summer, and 31 for fall.
  • There is also a listing of courses in a My courses block at the right side of the home page. It shows the course title, but not the term.
  • In each of the places where these course listings appear, each item is a link. Click on the course to go directly to it.
  • For customised navigation you can create your own Current Courses Block
Customising your My home page:
  • In the Navigation block at the left click My home. Your course list is repeated in the centre column. At the right you have some blocks.
  • At the top right of the centre column there's a button that says Customise this page
  • By clicking Customise this page you have the ability to rearrange, delete or add blocks to your My home page. At the bottom of the right column you can Add a blockMoodleDocs explains what each block does.
  • To move a block, click its up/down move arrows, then select its new location from the available dashed line boxes.
  • The Configuration icon lets you set up how each block works.
