Here are some other ways to categorize online learning:
- Synchronous Cohort Distance Learning - a group of students and an instructor, all in separate locations, meet at the same time in a virtual classroom environment (Blackboard Collaborate, Adobe Connect, telephone conference) - overcomes geographic, but not temporal, obstacles to learning.
- Asynchronous Cohort Distance Learning- students and an instructor move together through the weekly content of an online course. They communicate by email and discussion postings. - overcomes temporal (and possibly geographic) obstacles to learning.
- Continuous Intake - students start at any time and work at their own pace through the content of an online course. They have a course instructor to communicate with, grade and give feedback on assignments.
- Self-study - students work through the content of an online course at their own pace. There is no instructor contact.
