The following funding for costs associated with ABE courses at Okanagan College may be available to eligible students

Adult Upgrading Grant (AUG)

Okanagan College Upgrading Bursary (OCUB)

NOTE: OCUB will no longer be offered from Fall 2017, as Tuition will no longer being charged for upgrading courses, this bursary was provided by Okanagan College to off-set the cost of tuition when it was implemented in February 2016.

Adult Upgrading Grant (AUG): Eligibility Criteria
You are a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person
You are a resident of British Columbia
You are enrolled in eligible developmental courses at Okanagan College. See FAQ Which courses qualify? for more information
You demonstrate financial need:

To be considered for the Adult Upgrading Grant, a student must demonstrate financial need. The Financial Aid Office will determine eligibility based on income thresholds and family size.

Okanagan College Upgrading Bursary (OCUB)

OCUB will no longer be offered from Fall 2017 as Tuition for upgrading courses will no longer be charged

Click on the link below to download the application for the term you will be studying. You must apply separately for each semester of study, complete and return to the Student Services Administration Office at your campus or Financial Aid & Awards Office in Kelowna.

NOTE:Applications for AUG must be submitted within 3 weeks of the date of registration, students who do not submit an application risk being removed from classes.

You will be notified by letter and/or email the outcome of your application. Please note at peak times, it may take up to 4 weeks for your application to be processed. 

You do not need to make a payment on your account until you find out if your applications have been approved for provincial (AUG) . If you do not qualify then you will be expected to pay fees owing or withdraw from your classes. Students may appeal the decision on their applications by contacting Financial Aid & Awards.

You can start classes while you await the outcome of your applications, but you need to be registered in your courses and you must also have applied for AUG.

To be eligible to apply for the Adult Upgrading Grant (AUG) you must be registered in ABE (Adult Basic Education), ESL (English as a Second Language) or ASE (Adult Special Education) courses.

Students enrolled in other programs at Okanagan College and are registered in one or more courses as outlined above may also be eligible to access AUG funding.

Adult Upgrading Grant (AUG)

Adult Upgrading Grants (AUG) and/or Okanagan College Upgrading Bursary (OCUB) applicants may have a change in circumstances, see table below for which steps to take to have your application reviewed. Completed forms should be returned to your campus administration office in Salmon Arm, Vernon and Penticton or the Student Services office in Kelowna.

In December 2014, the provincial government announced it would no longer provide funding to colleges to offer ABE and ESL tuition free. In February 2016, Okanagan College's Board of Governors decided on tuition and supports that would apply at OC. 

A Provincial Government Announcement (8th August, 2017)  details that tuition will no longer be charge for Adult Upgrading Courses and ESL, as details become available these will be made available to students, Click here to view the Provincial Governments press release.

There will be staff from Okanagan College’s Financial Aid &Awards office at every campus to assist students taking ABE/ESL courses to apply for the AUG and financial aid support.. If you need immediate assistance (during regular business hours) you can call 1-800-767-5492, or visit your campus administration office in Salmon Arm, Vernon and Penticton or the Student Services office in Kelowna.

You will require information regarding your gross income in 2016. If you have filled out your 2016 income tax, it is the amount on line 150 of your form. If you haven’t filled out your 2016 tax return, you can estimate your gross income for the AUG application form. Information about your parents' or spouse's income may also be required.

Grants or bursaries received for tuition or ancillary fees will be applied directly to your Okanagan College student account, If you qualified for additional funds toward travel, childcare, or supply costs through AUG, these will be sent to you directly by cheque.
