Masters Level Practicum Program

Each year, we offer one part-time, unpaid practicum position for a Masters level student in a counselling psychology program.  The position is split between the Kelowna and Vernon Campus with the primary supervisor being located at the Vernon Campus.   The goal of this practicum is to provide a diversified and comprehensive training experience to prepare the student to become competent in working at a college or university counselling centre or similar setting.

Opportunities

  • An initial orientation to each campus and Okanagan College Counselling Services
  • Working with an integrated team of counselling professionals
  • Initial observation of professional counselling sessions followed by co-facilitation and eventual one on one sessions with students
  • Career, personal and student success counselling
  • Possible co-facilitation of group counselling and/or psycho-educational workshops

Supervision

  • 1.5 hour individual supervision per week with a primary supervisor
  • Ad hoc supervision with a secondary supervisor

Our Expectations

  • Enrolment in a masters level counselling psychology program
  • Mastery of basic counselling skills – a previous counselling practicum preferred
  • An 8-month, minimum 2 days per week commitment (September 2016 – April 2017)
  • Depending on your program, we would consider extending the practicum to June 2017
  • Students will maintain a case load of approximately 8-10 clients per week
  • practicum students are responsible to procure and provide confirmation of insurance coverage for the duration of the practicum

How to Apply (Application deadline March 15, 2016)

  • A letter of intent summarizing your theoretical orientation and a statement of how this practicum experience fits into your training and career goals (maximum 750 words)
  • A current curriculum vitae or resume including 3 references
  • Official or unofficial transcript from graduate program
  • 2 letters of reference from academic and/or clinical settings, preferably one from both or a final evaluation report from a previous practicum supervisor
  • A description of your master level practicum requirements (e.g. # of hours)

Selection Process

All applications will be reviewed by the selection committee, and shortly after the deadline, selected candidates will be invited for a personal interview.   During the interviews, candidates will be asked to take part in a brief mock counselling session.  Reference checks will follow before an offer is made.
