Mining Collaborative OC and BCIT

This is a unique opportunity to start a mining technology and engineering career that can bring you meaningful and rewarding employment in BC, Canada and beyond.

Overview

The Collaborative Mining Engineering and Technology Diploma/Degree Program provides students across British Columbia with a local and alternative pathway into Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology or Mining and Mineral Resource Engineering Programs at BCIT.mining 3

Students will begin their academic studies toward a technology diploma or engineering degree at their home institution before transferring to the full program at BCIT and studying in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Students will complete eight courses at the local institutions and will also have an opportunity to collaborate and network together through discussion forums and other online features when taking the online BCIT courses.

Three other institutions will deliver the program in collaboration with BCIT, and with the support of the Centre of Training Excellence in Mining (CTEM): College of New Caledonia (CNC), Northwest Community College (NWCC), and Okanagan College (OC).

Entrance Requirements & Application Process

STEP 1: Apply to Okanagan College

Students should apply to the Associate of Science at Okanagan College. The required courses below are scheduled at the Kelowna campus but some courses may also be offered at another campus. Requirements are listed in the Calendar here.

STEP 2: Express your interest in the Collaborative Mining pathway

Contact Phil Ashman, Associate Dean, Science Technology & Health and to discuss the pathway and next steps:
Tel: 1-250-762-5445, Email: pashman@okanagan.bc.ca

STEP 3: Register in OC classes

Once we know you are interested in the pathway, we will register you in the five fall classes and three winter classes at Okanagan College.

STEP 4: Apply to BCIT

January 5 - 12, 2018, the BCIT application for Year 2 of their Mining programs opens. The BCIT Mining Coordinator will provide more information closer to the date on the process.

Applicants to BCIT must meet all of the following entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first qualified basis as long as space remains:

  • English 12 (67%)
  • Physics 11 (67%)
  • Chemistry 11 (67%)
  • Math - one of the following: Principles of Mathematics 12 (67%) or Pre-Calculus 12 (67%)
Note: Equivalent or better grades from the matching Fall term courses can be used in place of the high school requirements, i.e. a grade of 67% or better in CHEM 111 will be accepted as equivalent to a 67% in Chemistry 11. Please contact the BCIT program advisor for assistance.

STEP 5: Admitted to BCIT
If you qualify, you will be conditionally admitted to BCIT for Year 2. At this point, you have a guaranteed seat in the program.

You must meet the conditions before being fully admitted. The conditions are that you successfully complete all courses at OC and successfully complete the BCIT courses in winter and in spring/summer as outlined below.
