Custom Longboard Design & Creation Camp
July 25-29, 2016 Grade 7-9
James Ross, SD23 Shop Teacher and OC  TTTE Grad/Alumni Instructor

Course will be running again Aug 15-19, 2016

Grade 7-9 hanging out at OC this summer building Custom Longboards
Youth learning the secrets of building their own custom longboard decks and racks.  This may very well be the start of their path towards the trades?  Carpenters or Cabinet Maker!

For a week 16 youth will gather in one of our fully equipped Construction Trades shops, to learn the art of skateboard making and to start the whole process of learning off they will build either a free standing or a wall mounted skateboard rack to display their craftsmanship.  At the end of the week, they will roll out of here on their own custom longboard and be able to skate through the summer.

Volunteers assist students with specialty equipment and tools Once they learn how to do what they need, they go solo.
 Concentration makes perfect
What a great way to introduce the trades to youth Developing the skills to spark their imagination and possibilities
Racks first then the longboards.

Ready, Set, Go-Karts Camp
July 11-15, 2016 Grade 7-9
Ryan McFadden,  TTTE Grad/Alumni Instructor

Get Ready Get Set Go Kart building
The camp is full of students from grade 7 to 9 who have a passion for go-kart mechanics and racing? These could be our future Automotive Service Techs or Heavy Mechanical Trades Mechanics!

During the week they will cover safety, learn to service and maintain the karts with an emphasis on their tires, brakes and steering systems.  That's not all - they will learn the functions of a four stroke engine and how it operates while getting their hands dirty disassembling, inspecting and repairing it. Prior to racing their karts (yes they will be racing around a track with lots of tires acting as a barrier) they will design the track, test their engines and on one of the karts all have a hand at customizing the body. Last day of Camp is RACE Day!  Friends and family are invited to come and support their race team.

Jr. Metal Fabrication Camp July 4-8, 2016 Grade 4-6

Antonio Henriques, Sheet Metal Instructor

Last week we had a class full of Grade 4-6's with small hands,  big smiles and lots of positive attitudes that come together to build Metal Toolboxes.

What a way to broaden youths view of the trades and who knows they could be our future Sheet Metal Workers or Metal Fabricators!

With the use of the Sheet Metal Shop, an instructor who loves to share his trade secrets,  they gained knowledge of how to create and use the tools of the trade by cutting, bending, riveting, drilling and painting their own one of a kind toolbox.

Not only were they all up for the challenge of making the toolboxes, they each had a story as to why they were interested in this camp and here are a few:
  • "My dad works on cars and has a few tools to bend metal - I wanted to show him I can do it too."
  • "I started coming 2 years ago and really, really liked it so came again this year." when asked which camps she took in the past she said, "Sheet Metal every year, I like bending metal to make things."
  • "I like to make things and a tool box will hold all my tools, so my parents signed me up."

How wonderful is that -  keep them interested and they may be our future Sheet Metal Workers or Metal Fabricators!!!! .

Thanks CampOC.

Stay tuned for more as the weeks go on - Trades CampOC Schedule
