Arts

The Associate Degree of Arts allows students to complete the first two years of a four-year Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Business Administration, among many others.

Careers in law, public service, management, publishing, advertising, and journalism are accessed through study of the arts.

Writing and Publishing Diploma graduates may pursue careers in book, magazine, newspaper and Internet publishing.

The Media and Cultural Studies Diploma may lead to advanced study in communications or media at universities in B.C. or other provinces, or it can act as a foundation for potential careers in public relations, marketing, journalism, advertising, research, writing, publishing, consulting, or communications.

Criminal and Social Justice Diploma graduates may find careers in government, policing, criminal investigation, administration, and private and public investigation, throughout the legal systems.

Graduates of the Diploma of Environmental Studies get jobs working in environmental impact assessment, mining, forestry, and other natural resources management sectors. They also benefit from special transfer agreements to universities in B.C.

Science

An Associate Degree of Science from Okanagan College and further studies towards a Bachelor’s degree helps you develop the practical experience and theoretical knowledge that will open the door to a number of career options or to further studies.

Graduates have found employment in industry, government, education, health professions and research. Many students go on to study in the fields of dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, optometry, forestry, high-tech, statistics and data analysis, and many more.

The Diploma in Human Kinetics is based on a core of university transfer courses that will also give students the option of transferring into Bachelor degree programs in physical education, kinesiology or human kinetics at other post-secondary institutions in B.C. and elsewhere. Graduates may also enter the workforce.

Diploma in Criminal and Social Justice

Two-year program

This program provides students with an Arts-based criminal and social justice education. Students take a variety of courses in Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, and Criminology, as well as elective Arts courses of personal interest. Some fields of inquiry may include indigenous studies, gender studies, race and ethnicity, globalization, and poverty

Diploma in Environmental Studies

Two-year program>

This program has four options in Interdisciplinary Environmental Arts, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, and Geographic Information Science. This diploma program allows students to understand the physical principles governing the environment and the social and cultural aspects that influence human behaviour towards the environment. Students have the option of further education in environmental studies or other disciplines, or may move directly into the workplace in the growing environmental sector.

Diploma in Media and Cultural Studies

Two-year program

This interdisciplinary program offers students a range of courses from a number of departments, including Communications, English, Sociology, Anthropology, Women’s Studies, and Geography. Students examine the rich interrelationship between media and culture in contemporary society and explore how culture is produced, commodified, communicated, regulated, and consumed.
This diploma can act as a foundation for potential careers in public relations, marketing, journalism, advertising, research, writing, publishing, consulting, or communications.

Diploma in Journalism Studies

Two-year program

This program introduces students to journalism and media criticism and to the contemporary social and cultural context within which journalists work. The program combines writing intensive courses in Communications and English with courses in Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, and Canadian History. While students may proceed directly to potential entry-level careers in journalism, especially in small markets and independent digital environments, completion of this program is intended primarily to provide students with the liberal arts education necessary to further study journalism.

International Development Diploma

Two-year program

This diploma is designed for students who are interested in working with organizations involved in development projects across the globe. The program provides students with an opportunity to engage with current global issues such as poverty, environmental degradation, racial and gender discrimination, corruption and lack of economic and financial transparency, and political deficiency. The diploma has two options:
I. International, Development Governance.
II. International, Development Management.

Diploma in Writing and Publishing

Two-year program

This program provides students with a solid grounding in four areas: creative and literary writing, publishing, communications, and business. Students receive applied training in print and web-based publishing, accounting, marketing, and management, as well as in creative, cultural, and professional communications

Arts: University Studies/Associate Degree

First Two Years of a Four-Year Degree Program

Students can choose a discipline emphasis for the Associate Degree of Arts in Communications, Crosscultural Studies, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Philosophy, Politics & Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, or Women’s Studies.

Diploma in Human Kinetics

Two-year program

This program provides a solid foundation of introductory study in the art and science of human movement. Students will learn principles, theories and practices in the areas of health and wellness, sport sociology, sport psychology, motor learning, biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor development, and human anatomy, and physiology.

The program is based on a core of university transfer courses that will give students the option of transferring into Bachelor degree programs in Physical Education, Kinesiology or Human Kinetics at other post-secondary institutions in B.C. and elsewhere.

*English 012 (minimum grade 60%)
Chemistry 011, one of Biology 011, Biology 012, BIOL 122 or BIOL 124, Mathematics 011.
High School graduation is not required if you are 19 years of age or over.
 

Science: University Studies/Associate Degree

First Two Years of a Four-Year Degree Program

Areas of study include Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Geography, and Physics.
