Essential Skills are the foundation skills needed for work, learning and everyday life. Through extensive research, the Government of Canada has identified and validated nine Essential Skills:

How are Essential Skills Measured?Okanagan College is proud to be a designated provider of TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential Skills.) TOWES is Canada’s essential credential, a nationally accepted assessment that measures individuals’ Essential Skills. (www.towes.com) These Essential Skills levels can be compared to the standard required for the chosen trade/profession. Individual plans can be developed to enhance essential skills development. Essential Skills assessments and tools can also help in the development of job descriptions, recruitment of candidates, completion of performance appraisals, training plan development and promotion of existing employees. The Essential Skill levels measure in a TOWES assessment can be cross referenced with over 350 occupational profiles.
