Hughes joins College Board of Governors

Okanagan College has a new Board of Governors member – Brian Hughes, a well-known investment advisor in the South Okanagan, has had extensive volunteer experience in support of education.

Hughes was appointed by the Provincial Government this month for a one-year term.

“We look forward to the unique and valuable contribution Brian will make to our Board deliberations,” says Chair Norm Embree. Hughes joins Vice-Chair Janet Shaw and Janice Perrino as members of the Board from the South Okanagan Region. Shaw, Perrino and other appointed members of the Okanagan College Board of Governors were reappointed to their positions late last fall.

“I am eager to help the new Okanagan College establish itself in the minds of our citizens as their community college and make it a focal point of our community,” says Hughes, who is a Vice-President of RBC Dominion Securities. He is a long time Rotary Club member and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship by his colleauges in Rotary in 2005. With Rotary, he has been responsible for organizing the Penticton Rotary Career Expo for the past 10 years, which will attract more than 2,300 students this year. He has also chaired the City of Penticton’s Social Development Advisory Committee for the past three years as well as being the founder and organizer of Penticton’s Philosopher’s Café.

Embree, Shaw, Perrino, Hughes and the other appointed members – Paul Johnson, Jane Lister, Allen Tozer, and Thom Tischik – will be joined at the Board of Governors’ table on Jan. 31 by newly chosen members from the Okanagan College community: Michael Conlin (faculty member), Angelika March (support staff representative), H. Donald Forbes (Kelowna student), and Eve Nicole Brighouse-Warren (Salmon Arm student).
