Open Ed

Open Education is an emerging trend in higher education and one that we are excited about. The genesis of open education is in the open source movement in technology; one innovation available to the whole community that can be implemented and improved upon by others. Moodle, our learning management system, is open source.

In addition to open source software, Open Ed impacts in higher education include open educational resources. Open Educational Resources (OER) is best defined by Downes (2007):

"Open educational resources are materials used to support  education that may be freely accessed, reused, modified and shared by anyone"

One type of  OER is open textbooks. BC Campuslinks to external site is considered a global leader in this area and has 90 reviewed textbooks available for download, free of charge.
