Elevator Failure

PROCEDURES:

All Personnel:

If you are in an elevator that stops:

  • Remain calm
  • Locate and activate the alarm bell
  • Respond to verbal communication from maintenance workers and follow their requests and directions
  • Keep everyone back from the doors of the elevator
  • Do not try to open the doors

If you find an elevator out of order, or not working:

  • Try to establish communication with the person(s) who may be in the elevator
  • Reassure and calm anyone who responds to your call
  • Do not try to open the elevator doors
  • Send a bystander to call the EMERGENCY NUMBER FOR YOUR CENTRE
  • If you are alone, explain to the person(s) in the elevator that you are going to get help, and you will be right back
  • Return and wait at the elevator until help arrives

Security/Maintenance Personnel:

  • Establish communication with the person(s) in the elevator
  • assure them that they are in no danger and you are going to get them out
  • tell them to stand to the back of the elevator, away from the doors
  • impress upon them that they must not try to open the doors of the elevator at any time
  • tell them that you are first going to lower the elevator to the lower floor
