Okanagan Wine Festivals Society Bursary recipient cooks up success

Alex Blumenschein is the 2016 recipient of the Wine Festival Society Culinary Management Award.

A student in the Culinary Management Diploma program at Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus, Alex hopes to pursue a career as a restaurant owner. His plan is to start out with a food truck or cart in the near future.

“This award is really exciting and brings a lot of financial relief,” says Blumenschein. “It will take away stress and allow me to focus on school and finishing off my program as well as I possibly can.”

After completing this program, Alex plans on returning to Okanagan College to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree.

“Together, the culinary management program and the additional business training offered by the BBA should put me in a good place to start out and hopefully be successful from the get-go in this industry,” he explains.

Blair Baldwin, Okanagan Wine Festivals Society (OWFS) General Manager and Okanagan College Instructor; Richelle Hasenhuendl, Administrator And Online Manager for OWFS; and Kathy Butler, Executive Director of the Okanagan College Foundation, presented Alex with the $1,000 bursary on Feb. 25.

“We are very pleased to present Alex with this award,” says Baldwin. “He is a very deserving recipient.”

“I like to describe Alex as a normal guy, doing normal things in an extraordinary way. He has a very bright future ahead of him and I’m glad we can give him a boost through this award.”

Kathy Butler congratulated Alex on his success in the program on behalf of the OC Foundation and expressed gratitude to OWFS for its ongoing support of students in the Okanagan.

“We look forward with great interest to hearing more about Alex’s accomplishments as he continues his education at the College, and as he makes his mark in the industry,” says Butler.

“The Okanagan Wine Festival Society has a long history of giving back in our community. The Society gives out three very generous bursaries to OC students each year, and these awards have a tremendous impact in helping young people pursue careers in business and food, wine, and tourism in the Okanagan.”
