The new Cactus Club Cafe located along Kelowna’s waterfront
has only been open for a few weeks but the restaurant is already dishing up
support for the next wave of culinary artists.
Okanagan College Culinary Arts students and instructor
Cactus Club has donated $5,000 to the Okanagan College
Foundation in support of the Kelroy Munroe Memorial Scholarship. The
scholarship assists students in the Culinary Arts Program, and honours the late
chef for which the award is named—an alumni both of the College and of Cactus
Munroe, who was born in Jamaica, came to Canada on an exchange
program to study Culinary Arts at Okanagan College. He was working as a sous
chef at Cactus Club on Banks Road in Kelowna when his life was cut short by a
tragic boating accident in August of 2010.
The local Cactus Club Cafe Kelowna established the annual memorial
award in 2011 to aid students that have completed the ten-month Culinary Arts
program and are planning to pursue Level 3 of the apprenticeship program, and a
career as a professional chef. Two tuition credits of $500 each are disbursed
Since 2011, nine students have received $4,500 in tuition
credits through the award.
This new support from Cactus Club will enhance and help to
ensure the continuation of the award for years to come. The next recipients will be selected in June of 2016.
