For Bachelor of Science in nursing student Shelly Somerville, mother of three young daughters, striking a balance between school, work, and family is a priority. So when she learned that she was selected as the 2015 recipient of the Lisa Wilhelm Nursing Opportunity Bursary, Shelly was thrilled.
“This award will help relieve any financial barriers that I face as I complete my bachelor degree,” says Shelly. “Coming back to school as a single parent has its challenges, and so I really appreciate this support and knowing that there are people out there who want to help me with my future.”
The annual award supports graduates of the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at Okanagan College who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. The bursary is also intended to support mature students and single parents. The award was established by Lisa Wilhelm’s partner Mike O'Neil along with the Wilhelm family in memory of Lisa, who studied nursing at Okanagan College and went on to be a successful RN; sadly, Lisa lost her life to cancer in 2007.
The Wilhelm family is happy that the award continues to assist students who share Lisa’s passion for nursing to be successful in their education.
“Formidable. That would be the perfect word to describe Lisa,” says Colleen Richardson, Lisa’s younger sister. “She had a very adventurous spirit. She loved to travel, loved snowboarding and scuba-diving. But she also truly loved nursing; she was very dedicated to it.”
