An Okanagan College Foundation donor took time to remind students of the difference health care assistants make in the lives of seniors before handing out her award.
Pat Underhill created the $1,000 Pat Underhill Bursary after witnessing the work health care assistants gave to her husband during his final years.
“You don’t know how much you are needed,” she told the class. “People are getting older and living a lot longer than they did way back when, so you won’t be wanting for a job.”
Underhill then presented the award to Ashley Haner. The 29-year-old mother of three was clearly surprised to be the recipient and warmly accepted Underhill’s hug.
“I’m ecstatic,” Haner said. “Before I got into this program I worked at Kelowna General Hospital in housekeeping and realized I wanted to work more closely with seniors. I love giving to people, and this money will help me to pay my student loan.”
